About

This site is my effort to capture and share a special place and time.

Alderbed Meadow is six and a half acres, two and a half of woodland, four of grassland, a quarter mile east of Charing village, off Pett Lane. It is a Local Wildlife Site. It was once part of Palace Farm, and it survived the agricultural intensification of the last century by being left stranded when the land around it was developed in the 1960s. Chalk springs rise at the foot of the Downs and run through it, on their way to the Charing Stream. The woodland is thought to be more than four hundred years old.

I walk there most mornings with my black labrador, Milo. For a year, from September 2025 to September 2026, I took my camera. Some of those walks produced a photograph worth keeping and twenty-five of them are on this site.

Everything was made on a monochrom digital camera with a 35mm lens. The camera has no colour filter over its sensor, so it cannot record colour at all. It only sees black and white.

The prints are made at home in Charing on an Epson SureColor printer, on matt or baryta paper chosen for each photograph, and each one is mounted in a frame found at a salvage yard in Ashford. Capture, editing, printing and framing are all done by me at home.

One place, one year, one lens.
